Part bubbly power-pop, part greasy, fist-shaking garage,
Detroit's The Hard Lessons forge a versatile blend of soul, strut and
rumble. The husband-and-wife team of guitarist Augie and keyboardist Korin
Louise Visocchi mix liberally from each category, seating Korins smoky R&B
piano ballads next to slinky, four-on-the-floor rave-ups and hook-lined,
heart-on-the-sleeve pop. Her sultry vocals provide much of the range, while
the chunky rockers steer things away from the sandy shoals of MOR. The
partnership's luster outshines the sum of its parts, and their latest, Arms
Forest, continues to hone their varied approaches, all united by their '60s
pop hook predilections. The eclecticism staves the advance of late-decade
garage-fatigue, and Korin's backing vocals dial-up the Stax in their guitar
crunch.
