Les Claypool's Duo de Twang w/Reformed Whores

When: Fri., Aug. 22, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $25
Considering Les Claypool’s side projects over the years, it’s no surprise that a modest acoustic endeavor would be his most obscure. Best known as the bassist and front man of Primus, Claypool has been known to collaborate frequently with Tom Waits, write novels and open his own winery. So when Col. Claypool announced his next release would be as a straightforward roots cover duo, we had no idea what to expect from a man who rarely traverses the norm. As it turns out, simply trading signature electric slap licks and high-intensity live shows for a steel bass and string of listening room dates is a sobering change that surprisingly works. Duo de Twang is a cover band featuring Claypool’s own original material reimagined as well as hits from ABBA, Alice in Chains and a slew of other artists that probably shouldn’t be sharing a bill. Claypool’s affinity for folk storytelling and chemistry with former M.I.R.V. guitarist Bryan Kehoe creates a fun, intimate portrait of an artist who is usually reserved for the musical fringe. It may not be a surefire evening for the average Primus fan, but I’ll be damned if we miss an evening with Claypool up close and personal. Reformed Whores open. MATT FOX
