Arthur Demarest Lecture: The Mysteries of the Ancient Maya Civilization and the Apogee of Art in the Americas
If you’ve been to The Frist in the past few weeks, you already know that one of the most surprising shows of the spring is Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne Collection. The exhibit’s emphasis on ritual objects and sacred statuary creates a tangible connection to the shamanic origins of art, and the individual works resonate with spooky weirdness, adorable charm and strange familiarity all at once. Vanderbilt professor Arthur Demarest is an archaeologist and anthropologist, and he’s one of the world’s leading experts on Olmec and Mayan cultures. Tonight, Demarest will speak about the fascinating work he does, and how it is reshaping what we know about pre-Columbian religion and ritual and the collapse of the Mayan civilization.
