If Larry Sparks were willing to make himself more available to gatekeepers by, say, moving to Nashville — or maybe if he were just more of a glad-hander — there’s no reason to think that he wouldn’t be a whole lot better known than he is. But Sparks has steadfastly kept himself in southern Indiana, and while he’s not quite as taciturn as he once was, he’s still a man of fairly few words. Hooking up with Rounder Records for his latest release,
Almost Home, ought to help on the PR aspect some, and the music’s quintessential, made by a mixed group of studio pros like fiddler Ron Stewart and band members like banjo man Tyler Mullins. Among the highlights are a dandy take on Hank Locklin’s massive hit “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On” and the fervent gospel mover “Somebody Touched Me.” Bluegrass fans already know that Sparks is a sure-fire Hall of Famer; here’s one of those fairly rare chances for the rest of Nashville to find out why.
