Kyp Malone w/Jolie Holland

When: Mon., Jan. 31, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $10
She may live in our modern times, but Jolie Holland is in many ways an echo of the distant past. Over four albums, she’s mined blues, vocal jazz, gospel and folk, covering standards of those traditions and penning originals with the same aching and beautiful veracity, recalling idealized eras of American lore at every turn. The effect is comprehensive, too: Holland’s sultry, world-weary voice is every bit as captivating as the stories of old she conveys, as well as the remarkable accompaniment that gives them life. (Recent collaborators include M. Ward, Marc Ribot and Jim White, among others.) On this stint of shows, Holland brings with her fellow Anti- Records member and TV on the Radio guitarist Kyp Malone, who is touring behind his solo debut, Rain Machine. Less big and exacting than TVOTR’s output, Rain Machine is nonetheless marked by a similar, blues-y experimentalism that has always endeared fans of Malone’s better-known affiliation.
