Kingpink Skinny Pimp & Al Kapone at Mercy Lounge

Don’t get us wrong, we appreciate headliners Lord T & Eloise and their ability to squeeze as much life as possible out of their “aristocrunk” gimmick—but it seems those gold-plated cracker-rappers are here all the time. So if you (like us) prefer your Memphis rap without your ascot in your dickie, you better get to the Mercy Lounge early to catch Bluff City legends Kingpin Skinny Pimp and Al Kapone. Both artists were around for the genesis of the music that would eventually be called “crunk”: Skinny Pimp as a member of the earliest Memphis mixtape circuit, Al Kapone as author of one of the genre’s definitive mass-culture milestones, the anthemic “Whoop that Trick” from Craig Brewer’s Hustle & Flow. Not that powdered wigs aren’t cool, but…well, ya know.
