Kill or Be Killed

By capitalizing on the nü-wave revival of the last decade and serving as a synth counterpart to the trendy alt-pop of The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand—while rehashing the romantic dance-rock of Duran Duran for a new generation—The Killers were obviously bred for the spotlight. For all their glitz and spoon-fed persona, though, the Las Vegas foursome have yet to match the authentic creative departure of opening French duo M83. Intent on doing more than merely channeling late-’80s electronica, M83 bask in its texture and emerge with a sound at once retro and strangely progressive. On tour behind their recent album Saturdays=Youth, this show marks not only one of ’08’s most beloved gems, but a new height for a seemingly limitless act.
