Kenny and Amanda Smith Band

When: Fri., Jan. 6, 9 p.m. 2012
Few artists have done such a consistently fine job of exploring the seam between straight-ahead, three-chord bluegrass and a more textured and — dare I say — sophisticated kind of ’grass than Kenny and Amanda Smith. Kenny’s delicious guitar-centric Return has drawn well-deserved praise for its exploration of good-old fiddle tunes and some originals, but the bigger news is that they’re introducing a new lineup featuring the ferociously talented Piatt boys — Owen on banjo, Cory on mandolin — and an equally adept bass man in former Southern Californian Austin Ward. The Smiths are excited about it, and with good reason: Young though they are, these fellas have already demonstrated the right combination of skill and sensitivity to mesh nicely with the Smiths’ increasingly distinctive style. If 2012 is the year they finally break through to top-shelf status — and it should be, since they already belong there on strictly musical grounds — this will be a big part of the reason why.
