The election of President Obama found young African American men celebrating in their local barber shops, getting trimmed up to resemble the new leader. Cultural commentators are already trying to grasp the ongoing impact the election will have on African-American communities as his term progresses, but many are warning that a victory for one man doesn't mean that The Struggle has ended for an entire culture. In her new book Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome, Joy DeGruy, an assistant professor at Portland State University, examines the notion that centuries of slavery and systematic racism have created generations of detrimental and destructive behaviors that must be acknowledged, addressed and overcome before real change can begin. Her appearance is free and open to the public; reservations are suggested. Find out more at scarrittbennett.org.
