Its been almost 20 years since New Grass Revival parted ways, and plenty of players since have been influenced by the bands decidedly nontraditional approach to (mostly) acoustic music. But there still arent many voices as big as former NGR lead singer/electric bassist John Cowans in the acoustic music world. (Chris Stapletons, and thats about it.) Cowan recently put out a new album, 8,745 Feet: Live at Telluride, that features several different incarnations of the John Cowan Bandincluding Reese Wynans on organ, Kenny Greenberg on electric guitar and Jeff Coffin on saxplaying the Colorado music festival that was originally inspired by an NGR show. The players Cowan has with him nowflatpicker Jeff Autry, mandolinist John Frazier, fiddler Shad Cobb and drummer Bryon Larrancecome closer to NGRs acoustic sound than other lineups hes had, only with a fiddle substituted for a banjo and drums to help drive things.
