Local indie-pop unit De Novo Dahl has endured countless ups and downs in their roughly decade-long existence. Extensive touring and a major-label release with Roadrunner Records saw them flirting with national recognition little over a year ago, but lineup changes have stalled their progress. Even so, frontman Joel J. Dahl has continued plugging along, his indefatigable knack for penning glossy but thoughtful folk-pop numbers having taken the forefront in recent months. With an approach as reminiscent of Thom Yorke and Rufus Wainwright as it is of Music City’s stable of legendary country and folk artists, Dahl’s most notable feature is his clear, rafter-reaching croon. It’s a voice that—even minus layers of saccharine instrumentation once provided by De Novo Dahl—can carry a song. And that’s just what it does. The Privates, Mean Tambourines and Bravo Max share the bill.
