I admire musicians who can keep things simple and interesting, and here’s a bill featuring two performers who do just that. From Mississippi, Jimbo Mathus proves himself a master of a sort of overstated subtlety on his new six-song release, Blue Light — a canny mixture of electric piano, steel guitar and Slim Harpo-style rhythm-guitar licks enlivens his tales of the road. Also appearing is the Ohio-born guitarist, singer and songwriter Patrick Sweany, who has made Nashville his home for the last several years. His crude, blues-based songs often work off the conventions of circa-1960 soul music, and he yells out his words in a gritty voice. What matters most on Sweany’s 2011 full-length, That Old Southern Drag, is the interplay of loud electric guitars, but the fine “The Edges” reveals his ability to make simple — but not simplistic — soul-inflected rock ’n’ roll.
