Plenty of songs with shared names have gone on to be hits. Jill Sobule, however, was none too happy to hear Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl," which she felt took even more than a title from her old hit. Actually, here's what she told HYPERLINK "http://therumpus.net/"therumpus.net: So here goes, for the first time in an interview: Fuck you Katy Perry, you fucking stupid, maybe not good for the gays,' title-thieving, haven't-heard-much-else-so-not-quite-sure-if-you're-talented, fucking little slut." So yeah. Perry's version, while catchy, most misses Sobule's Wainwright/Nilsson/Zevon-like wry humor and way with melancholic subject matter. Moreover, Sobule's career is a rich one that has been unfortunately overshadowed by her breakthrough hit, much like her old friend Zevon's was after "Werewolves of London." Sobule's most recent work, California Years, was a boutique effort financed totally (to the tune of some $80,000) by her loyal cadre of fans, and put out own her own, brand-spanking-new Pinko Records late this Spring, after Sobule was dropped by her label. They didn't hear a hit, evidently.
