Jessica Lea Mayfield w/Dylan LeBlanc

When: Fri., May 2, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $5
It’s albums like Jessica Lea Mayfield’s newest for ATO Records, Make My Head Sing, that make me wish there was an air-guitar emoticon — and that said emoticon was permissible within this fine publication’s style guide. But there’s no emoticon, so you’ll just have to imagine my hair flailing and fingers twitching as I write this pick. Mayfield’s latest has all the dreamy ethereal vocals that made Tell Me so alluring, but this time she cranks up the grunge for an album that is by turns dirty, pretty, dirge-y and gorgeous. Mayfield has stripped down the band to just herself and her rhythm section — bassist/producer/husband Jesse Newport and drummer Matt Martin — and turned in a powerful set of lean, mean tunes. Make My Head Sing is a prime slice of burly, beautiful rock ’n’ roll that is not to be missed. SEAN L. MALONEY
