All Grrrl's School
The Southern Girl’s Rock and Roll Camp is over, and it’s back-to-school time. So it’s a good thing that Jessica Hopper has prepped a manual for aspiring young female rockers to consult year-round: The Girls’ Guide To Rocking. Nowadays, Hopper’s a Chicago-based music writer who selects music for This American Life. But in the book she comes off more like a big sister who’s put in her share of time playing in bands and getting them press coverage, founding ’zines and filling just about any other role out there for a young, zealous rock lover. The book is out to prove there’s no one right way to launch a D.I.Y. teenage music career, and that—if there were—the boys don’t have a monopoly on it. The whole thing’s sharp, funny and practical, inspiring for 14-year-olds and—if we’re really being honest—a fun read for garage band alumni (or hopefuls) twice that age.
