The Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp is over, and its back-to-school time. So its a good thing that Jessica Hopper has prepped a manual for aspiring young female rockers to consult year-round: The Girls Guide To Rocking. Nowadays, Hoppers a Chicago-based music writer who selects music for This American Life. But in the book she comes off more like a big sister whos put in her share of time playing in bands and getting them press coverage, founding zines and filling just about any other role out there for a young, zealous rock lover. The book is out to prove theres no one right way to launch a D.I.Y. teenage music career, and thatif there werethe boys dont have a monopoly on it. The whole things sharp, funny and practical, inspiring for 14-year-olds andif were really being honesta fun read for garage band alumni (or hopefuls) twice that age.
