You can earn titles until the end of your name is a veritable alphabet soup but very, very few can include “CGP” on their business card. The late, great Jerry Reed was one of the seven remarkable pickers to be distinguished as a Certified Guitar Player by Chet Atkins or his estate — a high honor, to be sure, though it doesn’t even touch on Reed’s accomplishments as a frontman, songwriter and actor. The Guitar Man performed signature tunes like “Amos Moses” and “When You’re Hot You’re Hot,” many of which became hits for other artists, with a fast-talking, wide-grinning panache that translated well to big and small screens alike. Many know Reed best as wiseguy trucker Cledus Snow in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy, for which he also co-wrote and performed the immortal theme song “East Bound and Down.” Tonight’s show benefits the Chet Atkins Music Educational Fund and features two of the four remaining CGPs, Tommy Emmanuel and John Knowles, as well as session ace Brent Mason, host Darrell Toney and The Jerry Reed Tribute Band, and many more.
