If Tim McGraw had a starring role in The Blind Side — a big-screen version of an all-American arena show, if ever there was one — then it only makes sense that Jeff Daniels, a leading man who’s gone from Dumb & Dumber to making cerebral indies like The Squid and the Whale, would play the singer-songwriter circuit. Daniels has recorded four mostly live, entirely independent albums rife with wry Midwestern wit, impressive finger-style Piedmont blues guitar playing and conversational singing. He’s not one of those actors-turned-musicians who tries to deny that movies are what he’s best known for. No, he takes the crossover subject head on and does it cleverly in a song like “If William Shatner Can, I Can Too.” And his touring and albums benefit the theater company he helped launch in his native Michigan. Talk about having it both ways and making it seem pretty natural.
