Jedd Hughes w/Sons of Summer & Julie Roberts

When: Thu., April 12, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $10
Most everybody in this town will tell you a failed record deal is a very different animal than a failed music career. Julie Roberts and Jedd Hughes both have talent aplenty — Roberts as a singer first and foremost, Hughes as a songwriting-picking-and-singing triple threat — and they both put out major-label country albums in the mid-Aughts before turning to other options. For Roberts, a neotraditional balladeer known for a womanly and self-possessed (as opposed to girly) sound, that meant regrouping in California, then returning to Nashville to get back to album-making with the independently released Alive, which lands in her blue country sweet spot more than a couple times. Hughes, on the other hand, has written with everybody in town — from master storyteller Guy Clark to Music Row tunesmith Scooter Carusoe — teamed up with Sarah Buxton as a duo for a time and took his guitar chops and country-pop repertoire on the road with Ten out of Tenn. We should mention, though, that they’re playing separate shows on the same night.
