James Wallace and the Naked Light at The Basement

Get Naked

Get Naked
I Smile all Day I Smile all Night, the debut from local troubadour James Wallace and his backing band the Naked Light, is as joyous a listen as its title suggests. Its 33 minutes of quirky folk-rock and baroque-pop are filled to the brim with harmonies, dense studio orchestration and big, playful melodies that burst at the seams with wide-eyed exuberance. “Dancing Star” is like a Kinks ditty as performed by Simon & Garfunkel. “Killing the Dog” is a fine Nilsson homage. And for a relatively obscure local act to put an 11-minute story-song like “Saved at the Bottom” on a debut release…well that takes some balls. They pull all of this off with enough lush horns, background vocals, bouncy rhythms and sprightly attitude to make them one of Nashville’s bands to watch.
