For most Americans, Japanese internment camps are a vague idea, mentioned in a high school textbook but somehow not dwelt on as lovingly as those of our military victories and civil rights landmarks. This book fills in the blanks. As his polemic title may indicate, author James L. Dickerson wants to shine a light on this more disheartening and un-American side of American history. There’s plenty to learn; readers may be surprised to discover that President Roosevelt himself twice used the term “concentration camp” to describe the Japanese holding centers. In addition to the camps, his book’s three sections focus on the Trail of Tears and the Guantanamo Bay prison. Dickerson uses interviews with victims as well as historical documents to tell the story of these dark times and places, along the way making a convincing case that “America was never the melting pot it was made out to be.”
