Jack Silverman's Big 50 Birthday Soiree at The Basement

Ordeal or No Deal

Ordeal or No Deal
I work with Jack Silverman, and I’m still buying this record. Need a theme song for an imaginary ’70s sitcom, a sonic scene-setter for a seriocomic indie, or just something to evoke the mood of your favorite neighborhood joint dimming the lights as the ladies reach for their purses? You’ll find it on the long-gestating album by Silverman, the Scene’s managing editor by day and a genre-shredding bad-ass guitarist by night. Backed by all-stars Viktor Krauss, monster jazz keyboardist Tyson Rogers and drummer Derrek Phillips, the paper’s secret string-puller proves no less accomplished a string-bender, capable of shifting nimbly from an amped-up workout on the Meters’ “Cissy Strut” to spiraling Dark Side of the Moon-style space jams in his atmospheric instrumentals. (I’d say that even if his red pen weren’t held at my throat. But it never hurts to be safe.) Celebrating his birth sometime around the advent of talkies, Silverman hosts a CD release blowout no fan of guitar heroics should miss.
