The Clutters make garage rock that does away with all the frills and gimmicks obnoxiously imposed by the genres most buzzed-about latter-day superstars. Like Frank Blacks bastard son with a chip on his shoulder, frontman Doug Lehman barks out his casual and occasionally belligerent lyrics in a nasal croon that conjures images of barroom brawls between surprisingly literate barflies. With an eardrum-rupturing rhythm section and the meanest guitar tones this side of Sonic Youth, The Clutters are a constant reminder that sloppy, piss-drunk rock n roll most certainly is not a thing of the past. Though theyre joining the mass exodus of Nashville rock acts heading to Austin for SXSW next week, they dont play as often as wed like. Catch em while you can.
