You don’t get the sense that she’s trying to enhance her mystique, and thereby her following, by being elusive. Iris DeMent just hasn’t had much of a desire to write songs, make albums and play shows since the first half of the ’90s, when she raised the bar for rawboned, down-home country soul on her first two albums (
Infamous Angel and
My Life), then made a political stir with her third (
The Way I Should). There’s only been one since — the old-timey gospel collection
Lifeline, which held just one original song — and even that came nearly a decade ago. So it’s no small thing that DeMent’s revisited talk of writing again, or that she’s mentioned plans for a new album. Likewise, when she swings through town, it’s not something to be missed. 8 p.m. at The Belcourt JEWLY HIGHT
