What began as an oddball temp project targeting genre-specific musical stylesCanterbury neo-prog, Krautrock and a spattering of experimental electronicIcy Demons have matured into an outfit with an identity all its own. Originally fronted by Man Man's Christopher Powell and Griffin Rodriguez, the band has exponentially expanded their quirky insider rock by recruiting members from underground acts such as Prefuse 73, Tortoise and even cellist Tomeka Reid. That's most apparent on their recent release, Miami Ice, which lends Rodriguez' nauseous warble more time behind the mic than on past efforts, but the album gains support from a dense atmosphere of keyboards and tribal rhythms. Now that their multifarious sound can be channeled with a stronger lineupone varied enough to capture their songs' peculiar potencythere's probably no better time to catch Icy Demons live.
