I Wanted the BLACK Doll!

When: Aug. 30-Sept. 1 2013
Actress, rapper, poet, comedienne and all-around feisty force of nature, Music City’s own Sheerene Whitfield returns with this one-woman show. In I Wanted the BLACK Doll!, Whitfield dramatizes her own childhood as an exceptional, inexplicably militant 5-year-old who demanded her dolls be black, even as contemporary psychological statistics said that white dolls were supposedly more popular across the races. Whitfield shares stories of growing up dark-skinned in a predominantly color-conscious world, and the innate sense of self-worth she kept through it all. Morphing into multiple characters, she leads her audience on a journey of laughter, tears and self-empowerment. Whitfield’s local theatrical résumé includes appearances in Dream 7’s Dark Horsemen, Pulpits and other plays, and she’s got a range of commercial and full-length-film credits — including a speaking role in The Help.
