Following the lead of some family-style restaurants, the new Hustler Hollywood store on Church Street will offer a 10 percent discount to customers who present a church bulletin.

"We know that a lot of our customers are loyal churchgoers, and we want to send a message that we respect that and want to be a part of all aspects of life in our community," says Bob "The Throb" Hampton, assistant manager of the all-things-adult emporium, which opened with much hoopla in mid-July.

Church bulletin discounts were once a common feature in Nashville, especially at restaurants that catered to the after-church dining crowd, but the practice has gradually gone out of style because of religious diversity and the desire to be non-discriminatory about customer beliefs.

One local minister suspects a plot directed at his flock.

"I thought it was a bad thing when these discounts went away [at restaurants], but now I think it's a bad thing that they are coming back if they're going to be at that pit of sin," says the Rev. Sammy Potts of the Whopping Community Church in Brentwood. "I think this is a naked attempt to spread dissention among churchgoers and is a thrust at the heart of our beliefs."

Hustler's Hampton, who moved to Nashville from a position at the chain's Covington, Ky., location, says that the bulletin discount was also a popular feature at that store.

"Anytime you can give people a deal, it's a good thing," he says.

In response to complaints from customers of other religious traditions, Hustler also offers discounts for bulletins from mosques and synagogues.

"We haven't heard from the atheists yet," he says. "I'm not sure how we'll handle that. There's no such thing as a I-didn't-go-to-church bulletin."
