Hunx and His Punx w/Natural Child, Diarrhea Planet & D. Watusi

When: Mon., Sept. 12, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $5
The number of punk bands owing some serious debt to The Shangri-Las that have sprouted up over the past few years is absolutely staggering: Vivian Girls, Peach Kelli Pop, Best Coast, Black Lips. The list goes on and on. Who’d have ever thought that the most sincere pastiche of the ’50s girl group aesthetic would come from a flamboyant gay guy from Oakland? Hunx and His Punx’s debut, “Too Young To Be in Love,” is an undergraduate cultural studies paper waiting to happen. Hunx’s odes to young homosexual love sound familiar, so much so that — aside from the power chords and not-particularly veiled references to BJs — they wouldn’t sound terribly out of place in a TimeLife commercial advertising the hits of yesteryear. The band returns for their third Nashville show in six months, this time with new band members like Kyle “King Tuff” Thomas in tow. Also playing are Natural Child, D. Watusi and Diarrhea Planet.
