Hot Rize

When: Thu., June 10, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $20
Neither their formal retirement some 20 years ago nor the untimely death of wryly inventive guitarist Charles Sawtelle in 1999 has been quite enough to put a complete end to one of bluegrass’s best and most historically significant quartets. Plowing through the 1980s — some of bluegrass’s leanest years — Hot Rize neatly split the difference between modern and traditional ’grass on the strength of Sawtelle, banjo man Pete Wernick, e-bassist Nick Forster and the redoubtable Tim O’Brien — not to mention the crafty dose of wit and broad humor embodied in their Western swinging alter ego, Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. Studio guitar hoss Bryan Sutton might have seemed an unlikely successor to Sawtelle at first, but he’s found just the right space for himself within the group’s still-too-rare reunions. Get there early; this one’s likely to be a sell-out, and deservedly so.
