Hospitality w/Air Waves & Sherbert

When: Thu., Feb. 20, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $8
On their debut self-titled long player, Hospitality was still sifting through the bits of post-Belle and Sebastian indie pop, and like contemporaries Camera Obscura, they mixed up a batch of songs that were catchy and quick even as they teetered on the edge of twee overload. The Brooklyn trio returns with Trouble, bringing a more wizened perspective together with a tighter, more band-oriented sound that’s grubbier on the edges and more forceful down the center. They’re still recognizably themselves — thanks in no small part to Amber Papini’s distinctive vocals — but from the open-ended bass drive of lead single “I Miss Your Bones” to the melancholic four-on-the-floor of “Last Words” to the watery New Wave guitars of “Rockets and Jets,” Trouble represents an upgrade all the way around for a band that’s always had a good ear for melody and has a developed a nifty sense of arrangement to go with it.
