Honeyhoney w/Kristina Train

When: Sun., Aug. 10, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
There was a time when Ben Jaffe and Suzanne Santo lived in L.A. — she landing stepping-stone television roles and he supplying music for TV. After becoming the decadently rootsy songwriting duo Honeyhoney, they spent one album on a label co-owned by Kiefer Sutherland and the next on Mercury Nashville imprint Lost Highway — which, of course, has since ceased to exist. They’re among the most underrated Hollywood imports to arrive here in recent years, unafraid to get theatrical in their writing, arranging and singing, but doing it with tremendous lightness and relaxed musicality. (If you really want to see them lay it on whimsically thick, check out their dramatic readings of romance novels on YouTube or their Etsy store that peddles “Deeply Sensual Handwritten Haikus.”) Besides opening a string of dates for Bieber-aged Dylan disciple Jake Bugg earlier this year, Jaffe and Santo have been in the studio with T Bone Burnett-affiliated producer Keefus Ciancia, chipping away at a new album. If the rough tracks they shared with me are any indication, there’s much to look forward to. JEWLY HIGHT
