In recent months, local indie-pop practitioners Heypenny have proven themselves to be masters of self-marketing. Their dazzling costumes and larger-than-life marching band entrance at Mercy Lounges Road to Bonnaroo 8 off 8th series handily won them a spot in the Manchester festival, and their forthcoming EP CopCar will be released in coloring-book format. Seriously. Pretty ingenious. But as much as they may be carving a niche for themselves as the Nashville rock scenes latest masters of flash and hype, their material retains a unique identity all its own, and thats what were interested in. The EPs titular song features entrancingly staccato vocals delivered over percussive, electronic-pop passages, and Heypennys propensity for sundry instrumentation and attention to detail are impressive. Plus, vocalist Ben Elkins knows his way around a turn of phrase. Id wrap myself round any finger shed stick up at me. Thats not bad. Heypenny are utilizing the 8 off 8th format to their advantage, inviting seven other local actsincluding Madi Diaz, Natalie Prass, Mikky Ekko, Coral Castles and moreto open. Oh, and expect some top-secret new props and outfits from Heypenny. Exciting.
