Heypenny EP Release and 8 off 8th

In recent months, local indie-pop practitioners Heypenny have proven themselves to be masters of self-marketing. Their dazzling costumes and larger-than-life marching band entrance at Mercy Lounge’s Road to Bonnaroo 8 off 8th series handily won them a spot in the Manchester festival, and their forthcoming EP CopCar will be released in coloring-book format. Seriously. Pretty ingenious. But as much as they may be carving a niche for themselves as the Nashville rock scene’s latest masters of flash and hype, their material retains a unique identity all its own, and that’s what we’re interested in. The EP’s titular song features entrancingly staccato vocals delivered over percussive, electronic-pop passages, and Heypenny’s propensity for sundry instrumentation and attention to detail are impressive. Plus, vocalist Ben Elkins knows his way around a turn of phrase. “I’d wrap myself ’round any finger she’d stick up at me.” That’s not bad. Heypenny are utilizing the 8 off 8th format to their advantage, inviting seven other local acts—including Madi Diaz, Natalie Prass, Mikky Ekko, Coral Castles and more—to open. Oh, and expect some top-secret new props and outfits from Heypenny. Exciting.
