Newcomers Heartbeater might not realize it, but theyve Frankensteined themselves up a pretty sweet little genre-combo with their brand-new self-titled EP. The four tracks on Heartbeaters eponymous debut are a gritty style of pensive rock n roll that meshes the stout rhythmic backbone of Pixies and other gnarly early grunge and college-rock acts with a wet, Southern-tinged wall of surfy guitars. Though these riffs might just be nicked from J. Masciss private backlog, frontman Greg Mabrys no-foolin vocals and Jon Shoemakers loping bass lines recall heartland rockers like Springsteen and Petty. Its an unlikely combination of sounds, but one that works for a pretty simple reason: Its unique, and its ballsy as all get-out. Hammertorch, Powerbrrrd and Bad Cop share the billand trust us, thats one solid lineup.
