Heartbeater, You've Got the Best of Me

Heartbeater, You've Got the Best of Me
Newcomers Heartbeater might not realize it, but they’ve Frankensteined themselves up a pretty sweet little genre-combo with their brand-new self-titled EP. The four tracks on Heartbeater’s eponymous debut are a gritty style of pensive rock ’n’ roll that meshes the stout rhythmic backbone of Pixies and other gnarly early grunge and college-rock acts with a wet, Southern-tinged wall of surfy guitars. Though these riffs might just be nicked from J. Mascis’s private backlog, frontman Greg Mabry’s no-foolin’ vocals and Jon Shoemaker’s loping bass lines recall heartland rockers like Springsteen and Petty. It’s an unlikely combination of sounds, but one that works for a pretty simple reason: It’s unique, and it’s ballsy as all get-out. Hammertorch, Powerbrrrd and Bad Cop share the bill—and trust us, that’s one solid lineup.
