Have Murs-y

A prolific rapper who built his reputation the past dozen years on indie-hop flagships Def Jux and Rhymesayers (collaborating with Slug in Felt), Murs makes his jump to the majors with Murs for President. Though a staple of the underground—his name is an acronym of Making Underground Raw Shit—he’s never been a strict backpacker. While he’ll bust political science and get conscious on you, he’s not above playing it tough, situating him among the fence-sitters attempting to bridge hip-hop’s various camps. While his everyman eclecticism has generally served him well, some tracks on the new album feel too broad, like the emo-tinged breakup track “A Part of Me” and the less-than-the-sum gospel-soul of “Time Is Now,” which features guest Snoop Dogg. That said, Murs’ rhyme is in fine form, skating from braggadocio to sensitive over fine tracks by 9th Wonder and DJ Quik
