As the Scene’s brand-new advice columnist, local rock ’n’ roller and Third Man Records honcho Ben Swank doles out questionable pearls of anti-wisdom. As founder and booker of the records-and-bands event Hate Life, he inconsistently books consistently raw and raucous rock bills. Like tonight’s, for instance, which will feature Ohio’s lo-fi proto-punk maniacs Puffy Areolas, whose discordant, squawking, off-the-rails songs have names like “Deathcraze,” “Puking in Piss” and “Fuck Your Pretzel” and land somewhere between The Stooges, Grinderman and the sounds produced by a 12-car pileup. Also on the bill will be Obnox — the side project of Areolas drummer Lamont “Bim” Thomas — as well as excellent Memphis garage punks Cheap Time and Swank’s own visceral rock ’n’ roll three-piece, The Black Faces. The show is free, so you can put the money you would have spent on cover toward purchasing your first hearing aid. Seriously, with this much Ohio- and Dirty South-bred feedback bouncing off the ancient walls of little ol’ Dino’s, you’ll probably need it sooner than you think.
