Happenings: Yarns & Strings

The first in a new series of "Happenings" for this Belmont/12South gallery, Yarns & Strings commemorates Indian Independence Day. The evening will include an exhibition of Bengali textiles, live regional music, light Indian hors d'oeuvres and a tea-tasting with Sarah Scarborough of Fair Trade Teas. Created by the Weavers Studio in Calcutta, the hand-woven textiles featured at the event are painted and embroidered using natural dyes and traditional techniques. South Asian musician Ed Yazijian will also be giving a lecture on the folk music of West Bengal and Bangladesh. In addition to elucidating the history and genres of various rural musical forms, Yazijian will be demonstrating both percussion and stringed instruments. Seating for the event is limited and reservations are recommended. Tickets for the event are $20; Call 386-9485 for reservations.
