From Maya Lin and Mark Lombardi to the Gee’s Bend quilts currently on display at The Arts Company and the Frist, contemporary artists have long used maps as a way to connect what’s real with what’s abstract. For his latest exhibit at Zeitgeist, Hans Schmitt-Matzen will showcase a series of his own cartological explorations. Titled Aerial Maneuvers, the black-and-white works see Schmitt-Matzen using his familiar oil-on-C-print technique, but this time he’s using aerial photographs. The results are fantastically rhythmic gestural paintings that recall everything from Rorschach inkblots to a graffiti artist’s tag. In his artist’s statement, Schmitt-Matzen calls the series “a meditation on recognizing the value of a balance between human control and the unplanned.” Let’s see if this work stands up to the excellent summer offerings Zeitgeist has been showing.
