It’s hard to figure when the members of local post-rock-inflected ensemble Hands Off Cuba find the time to make music together — HOC features current and former members of Lambchop, KORT, Silver Jews, Cortney Tidwell’s band, The Privates, Hobbledeions and more. But it’s as Hands Off Cuba that these performers — Adam Bednarik, Matt Glassmeyer, Ben Marcantel, Scott Martin, Jonathan Marx, Ryan Norris and William Tyler, to be specific — step out of their sidemen roles and forge instrumental numbers that don’t need a vocalist in order to be melodically transfixing. For all its ambient, experimental leanings, their recent EP,
Volumes of Sobering Liquids, isn’t a formless listen, but rather a dynamic collection of sprawling build-ups, occasionally complex rhythms, myriad instrumentation, lush production, commanding riffs and the sort of subtle volatility that fans of Tortoise will appreciate. Also on the bill will be fellow locals Black Patch and Sleepy Kitty (St. Louis).
