When Murfreesboro country-rockers Hammertorch were passed over for this years Next Big Nashville lineup, the little conspiracy theorist that lives in the back of our collective brainand makes most of our decisionspostulated that it was all a plot to make sure that Music City's lap-steel hacks didn't get shown up. Unlikely, we know, but paranoia is the diesel that keeps this truck a-runnin'. On the new Torch EP Big Softies, we find the band outgrowing their Glossary Jr. training pants and heading into more spacious and spaced-out territory. Perhaps its a little more pop, but with their typical explorations of the Volunteer State psyche left intact. Hammertorch are joined by Music City's beardos-in-chief Hands Down Eugene and those lovable scamps Shoot the Mountain.
