Can there ever be too much
Hairspray? Middle Tennessee has had its serious fling with the musical in the recent era, including a production in the ’Boro and Street Theatre Company’s very successful April 2011 mounting directed by Jon Royal. Well … it is a load of subversive fun, and the music is catchy and exuberant, and anything based on a John Waters film commands interest. And who doesn’t want to root for a lovable teased-up plus-size teenage girl from Baltimore who dreams of appearing on the local televised dance party while also striking a blow for racial integration in the socially on-the-brink 1960s? Director Patrick Kramer should be in sync with the clever, somewhat raucous material for this new Circle Players production; ditto choreographer Kate Adams-Johnson. Whitney Vaughn, a Lipscomb University junior, stars as Waters’ plucky heroine Tracy Turnblad.
