Randi Michaels Block has lived in Nashville since 1992, and she has worn various hats in the music biz — composer, singer, producer — and been affiliated with artists such as Gloria Estefan, The Mavericks and Engelbert Humperdinck. More recently, Block has been following her theatrical instincts. Her second musical, Guess Who’s Coming to Seder?
was originally developed in Music City via readings at the Darkhorse Theater in 2011. Later, under the guiding hand of producer-director Ted Swindley, the piece was further workshopped in New York, then Tulsa. Swindley — now involved in launching a summer Broadway production of his work Always ... Patsy Cline
, starring American Idol
’s Crystal Bowersox and Smallville
’s Annette O’Toole— has had to curtail his involvement, and so Block, who has already pulled the hat trick here as author of book, music and lyrics, is now also directing this new mounting, which promises a full theatrical treatment. A one-act, 100-minute opus featuring 14 songs in a range of eclectic popular styles, Seder tells the story of Sarah Friedman, who holds her first Passover dinner — and invites eight non-Jewish friends. Personal confession meets comedy, and the cast comprises an interesting mix of theater and music-industry types, including country artist and actress Lari White. The musical direction is by Dan Serafini, whose live combo features local session players. For tickets, visit ticketsnashville.com
