Growing Tennessee ata Tennessee Arts Commission Gallery

Young at Art

Young at Art
In Hearts of Darkness, Francis Ford Coppola predicted that someday a little girl in middle America would pick up a camcorder, and the art of movies would be changed forever. The young participants in this Tennessee Arts Commission exhibit—more than 50 children across the state, ages 8 to 18, from migrant farm communities to rural Appalachia—have done something less grandiose but equally remarkable: they’ve used still photography to document their families and their lives. The resulting photographs have been shown from Chicago to Knoxville, prizing the kids’ own perspective over sociological study. Extending its outreach services, the commission will host a summit Sept. 23 for Tennessee’s Latino artists in conjunction with the exhibit.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: Aug. 13. Continues through Sept. 25, 2009
