The people make the party

Nightlife is everywhere. It’s not just about bars, clubs and cafés. Some very memorable parties happen in the most unlikely of places.

Who ever thought that the frou-frou folks at Nfocus would have their 10-year anniversary bash at something as pedestrian as a mall? Last Friday, Nashville’s haute monde converged at the second-floor entrance to Green Hills mall. Instead of a guest list, a phlebotomist was on hand to verify that the guests’ blood ran pure and blue. Naturally, I was skeptical. The last time I attended a mall party was to hear Debbie Gibson sing “Electric Youth.” And, hello, look where that got her.... Luckily, my friend, the uber-popular DJ Mindub, was providing the music, elevating the vibe from stuffy to fun and fluffy.

$The party had an excellent turnout. I ogled some serious bling, chatted with Alice Randall and David Ewing, and had Lucius Carroll ask if he was invited to my wedding. After a few drinks, I went deep undercover. I introduced myself to a squinting older gentleman in a vintage Pierre Cardin jacket as “Cookie Vanderslice.” “Oh yes,” he nodded, “how’s your mother?” We chatted on for a few minutes. Why not? I do live in 37205, dahlings....

Mavens schmavens. The crowd was much fresher (and decades younger) at the newish PM café. Friday evening, between 9 and 11, the entire place was full of super-cute alterna-types. Stylish scenesters Carmen Allison and Derek Lachney stopped by before running on to Bar Twenty3. Speaking of Bar Twenty3, Ben Goldberg and Austin Ray (son of Gayle) have started 2004 right with a new weekend door policy. The guest list is in full effect and you must be suitably stylish. No Dockers and UT caps, and the only excuse for wearing a Titans jersey is if you are one. Some will find it harsh, but the urbane lovelies who make it in are gonna love it.

Early Saturday evening found me showing hotshot lawyer and Chapel Bistro co-owner Jerry Martin how to pour a proper martini. Jerry worked the cocktail shaker to serve council members David Briley and Mike Jameson and Nashville Bar Association president Gregory Ramos at John and Renee Stewart’s baby shower.

On the other side of town, council member Adam Dread was emceeing at the best party in town. For Titans fans, the Belcourt Theatre was the place to be. How can you not love a nonprofit theater that serves Guinness? The crowd was full of flavor, and the collective energy was intense. Bubbas rocked with $3 Miller Lites, hipsters in limited edition Jordans mingled with fancy-frocked sorority girls, and insouciant cheerleader David Carter, a.k.a. “The Flame,” and his partner “The Shield” kept people smiling. If it weren’t for the presence of many youngsters, I think the revelry would have gone from “family-friendly” to “Girls Gone Wild.” Sadly, not even “The Flame” could keep the Pats from a horribly cheap win. Bastards.

It’s not where you are that makes the party, but who you’re with. Come get the best of both this Wednesday the 14th at the Mercy Lounge’s “Hump.” Want more? Then buy tickets now for The Playboy Club Tour, which kicks off in Nashville at the Havana Lounge on Feb. 24. The tour will feature burlesque entertainment, some of Hef’s fave memorabilia and playmates. Hot! (800) 919-6272 for tickets.
