GroundWorks Theatre co-founder Robert A. O'Connell continues to crank out original plays, and this is his second consecutive Christmastime opus. As is often the case, O'Connell indulges in irony and whimsy, here serving up a view of Christ's birth that involves many of the bit players who usually surround the story. Two simple shepherds are steered toward the City of David by a well-intentioned but dimwitted angel (Clarence, maybe??). Along their travels, they encounter a Roman centurion, local revolutionaries, an innkeeper and a certain little drummer boy. O'Connell's thrust is lighthearted, but the ultimate goal is a sense of the wonder of that first Christmas and its meaning to humankind. The cast features Chris Basso, Lane Wright, Martha Manning and six others. O'Connell directs.
Tuesdays, Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Dec. 12. Continues through Dec. 21, 2008
