Even the most disciplined sideman or studio player sometimes wants to cut loose, and even the most creative frontman sometimes yearns to give up the responsibility that comes with control. Combine these longings with a love for vintage rhythm & blues full of soul shouting, gritty guitars, snappy drumming and blaring horns, and you’ve got Grooveyard, a project that’s way more to the side than their fans (and, one suspects, the members themselves) would like. With guitarist Pat Buchanan, drummer Greg Morrow, bassist Mike Brignardello and keys man Reese Wynans — familiar names all — laying down the central grooves, singer John Cowan (on the hand mic, as he puts it, rather than the bass) twists and turns, soars and dives through all manner of R&B that never lets up.
