Gretchen Peters at The Rutledge

Peters-Built
Gretchen Peters has written quite a few songs over the years, like many of our best landscapers and restaurant barbacks—but theirs never got covered by Etta James, George Strait, Neil Diamond, Bryan Adams or Martina McBride, whose 1994 recording of “Independence Day” won Peters the CMA’s “Song of the Year” honor. Now it’s her turn to the rock the mic, something she does rather infrequently between songwriting gigs. Tonight’s the CD release party for her deluxe, case-bound, numbered, limited-edition two-disc compilation Circus Girl: The Best of Gretchen Peters, and it’s free—the party, not the CD. The show will be simulcast on The Rutledge’s website, and Peters will take requests and read emails and the odd Twitter tweet from fans near and far—mostly from the UK, where, like many of her Nashville compatriots, she’s a much bigger star. Hell, you could probably even text her from the back bar if you’re feeling particularly lazy. Take note, however: the show starts extra early, the better to accommodate European fans—as well as those annoying folk who always complain that gigs start too late. Naps, people. Naps.
