Greg Cartwright

When: Fri., July 11, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: free
As a singer and songwriter in a host of garage, punk, R&B and rock ’n’ roll bands that have kept Memphis on the music map — including Oblivians, Compulsive Gamblers, Reigning Sound and The Parting Gifts — Greg Cartwright (aka Greg Oblivion) is kind of a big deal. This evening he’ll celebrate the release of one of those bands’ latest record — Reigning Sound’s Shattered — with a solo appearance at East Nashville record shop Fond Object. The album, the band’s first since 2009’s most excellent Love and Curses, was recorded at Daptone’s Brooklyn studio, and it will be available for purchase at tonight’s show, four days before it drops on July 15. And that’s a good thing, as songs like the rocked-out, organ-dripping R&B throwback “Falling Rain” and the Stones-y rave-up “My My” are essential additions to the singer-songwriter’s prolifically killer catalog. While songs like the bluesy, smoky slow burn of “In My Dreams,” crooned in Cartwright’s soulful blue-eyed rasp, might garner a Black Keys comparison or two, that’s only because avowed fan Dan Auerbach might be taking a couple cues from Cartwright. The show is free and so is the beer! ADAM GOLD
