His sound was far from conventional, and his voice was anything but pristine. And most would agree that his background as the progeny of an affluent Florida citrus magnate was hardly typical for a country-music star. But Gram Parsons indelible mark upon the genreand his status as a founding father of alt-countryis undeniable. So why is it that an essential member of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds (not to mention the man who launched the career of Emmylou Harris) still hasnt been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame? That isnt exactly clear. But the folks behind the Second Annual Gram Parsons Tribute Night are doing their damnedest to correct that oversight, and their petition site (gramparsonspetition.com) has the testimonials to prove that the legendary songsmith is perceived as more than merely a cult-status footnote in the annals of Country Music History. Paying homage to Parsons will be Magnet and Steel hitmaker Walter Egan and his tribute band The Grampyres, Brian Molnar & the Naked Hearts, The Derelicts, Chris James & the Gram Band and more.
