Going Green

By now, The Greencards’ name seems almost anachronistic. Their Australian and UK origins notwithstanding, the youthful trio—Eamon McLoughlin (violin), Kym Warner (mandolin) and Carol Young (bass)—are firmly rooted in Nashville’s roots music community. Credit that not only to eclectic sensibilities that blend bluegrass, country, Celtic, rock and more into a boldly distinctive form of modern string-band music, but also to a genuine enthusiasm for hearing and jamming with fellow musicians—not to mention a presence that’s energetic and high-spirited. With their fourth album (and first for Sugar Hill Records) already in the can, they’re closing in style a year that saw them earn their first Grammy nomination. And since the group’s new teen guitar phenom Jake Stargell has a summer’s worth of gigs under his belt, they ought to be tight as a tick too.
