Global Cabaret Music Series: One Unforgettable Experience! With Roy Futureman Wooten and Kevin Kalimbaman Spears

When: Sat., Aug. 9, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$15
The Global Education Center’s 2014-15 Global Cabaret Music Series kicks off tonight with a showcase of percussive brilliance and musical innovation featuring Roy “Futureman” Wooten and Kevin “Kalimbaman” Spears. Wooten is famed for his musical inventions, like the Drumitar and the “RoyEl,” a keyboard-style instrument that plays notes not found in traditional Western music scales, but instead is based on the periodic table of elements. Besides winning five Grammys with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, he’s crafted a series of ambitious and intriguing solo projects that mix and match elements of jazz, classical music and spoken word, as well as African and Latin rhythms. Spears’ playing brilliance and idiomatic diversity on the kalimba, also known as the African thumb piano, has been featured in the duo Rhythm Nomadic with Count M’Butu of the Derek Trucks Band. He’s equally comfortable in jazz, rock, funk, R&B, African or hip-hop settings. This promises to be a night with no musical boundaries or artistic restrictions. RON WYNN
