Gary White's Relique

When: Saturdays, Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Continues through Nov. 13 2011
Phone: 650-0063
Gary White’s heritage is just about as all-American as you can get — he counts Cherokee, Creek and African-American among his bloodlines — and the 24-year-old artist credits this melting-pot background as a major influence in his work. A recent graduate of Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, White is exhibiting a collection of clay sculptures in East Nashville’s Bryant Gallery. Drawing on Native American rituals and African-American culture, the work integrates mythology, totems and urban culture references. Relique will also include White’s pottery and jewelry, but it’s the sculptures we’re most excited about: Some of the best pieces look like anthropomorphized terra-cotta portraits of modern-day saints.
